Who says that falling temperatures means we can’t still have cocktails al fresco together?!  Why, that’s what fire pits, electric blankets and hot toddies are for!  Here we share three of our favorite winter warmers for a festive glow all holiday season long.

Pomp Toddy

Did you know that the English originally attached handles to tea bowls to prevent ladies from burning their fingers while sipping on hot beverages? These ornately decorated vessels became family heirlooms, being passed on with great ceremony through the matriarchal line. So, what better excuse to dust off grandma’s tea set than the Pomp Toddy, the quintessential hot tea cocktail and notorious cure-all for any winter-time blues.

1 ½ oz Pomp & Whimsy Gin Liqueur
3 oz earl grey tea
cinnamon stick
lemon slices

Add one Earl Grey tea bag and a small cinnamon stick to a warmed teapot and pour over 6 oz of hot (but not boiling) water. Allow the tea to steep for 4-5 minutes. Pour 1.5 oz of Pomp & Whimsy into two porcelain teacups and divide the hot tea between the two cups. Serve immediately, garnished with a lemon wheel (pinkies out).

Mulled Pompernel

Is there anything more evocative of the holidays than a steaming glass of mulled wine?  There’s a reason why candle companies release mulled wine flavors alongside the gingerbread and pine staples at this time of year.  Hot spiced wine is a tradition that dates back centuries and is guaranteed to get everyone in a festive mood.  In our version, we draw on a favorite punch recipe that batches well and dresses up nicely for the occasion. 

1 part Pomp & Whimsy Gin Liqueur
2 parts medium bodied red wine (e.g. Malbec, Zinfandel)
1 part apple cider
whole mulling spices (e.g. 1 cinnamon stick, 4 cardamom pods, 2 star anise, 1 vanilla bean
sliced pear, blackberriesl

Add the Pomp & Whimsy, red wine, apple cider, sliced pear and a handful of fresh blackberries to a heavy bottomed pan.  Fill a small tea diffuser with the mulling spices and add to the pan.  Slowly bring to the boil and simmer gently over a low heat for 10 minutes.  Strain and cool slightly.  Serve in glass cups or mugs garnished with fresh pear slices or orange wheels.

Warm & Whimsy

Our final winter warmer comes from our dear friend and beverage director Christina Mercado @shakestirpour of Newport, Rhode Island. Another tea-based beauty, this recipe combines the soft floral notes of chamomile with crisp applejack for a delicately light floral finish. Christina recommends garnishing with a dried lavender frond for added aromatics.   The base recipe serves two, as all tea should.

1 ½ oz Pomp & Whimsy
3/4 oz applejack
1/4 oz lemon juice
1 tsp wildflower honey
5 oz chamomile tea

Into a warmed teapot, add Pomp & Whimsy, applejack, lemon juice and honey.  Give a stir to mix in the honey.  Add in hot chamomile tea and stir gently to combine. To serve, pour into warmed teacups and garnish with a thin lemon slice and lavender frond.

 

THE MODERN OLD-FASHIONED

The Old-Fashioned and its companion vessel, the single or double old-fashioned glass, is arguably the oldest and truest of all cocktails – a simple mix of spirit, sugar, bitters, and ice with a citrus twist. What has stayed constant over the 150 years of cocktail history, however, is the glassware in which it has been served. We would say ideal not just for old-fashioned cocktails, but for dangerously modern ones too.
